about

'Closeout' is about consumerism, the throwaway economy, and the environmental and ethical consequences. The idea for the song was inspired by the short movie The Story of Stuff* which details the true cost of consumerism. The main idea behind the song is that when we buy a product we are actually buying a polished raw material (e.g. iron ore), refined by chemicals or 'toxins'. The song also makes use of advertising slogans that appear to sell the earth as a product. Some imagery was also inspired by the animations of Steve Cutts**

lyrics

"Buy one and get one free"
I’m on a killing spree
for my economy.
I gotta shop to stay alive.

Toxins and iron ore
- buy at your discount store;
got some, but I need more
to keep me numb and satisfied.

**Chorus**
This is a closeout sale. Buy up and throw it all away!
"Time is running out; better hurry now or you’ll miss out!"
We’re buying now, but paying later
when the last tree falls, and the bedrock crumbles underneath
for our screens, the ones that keeps us fighting
for the machine that keeps the oceans rising.
And when its gone, its gone for good
so hurry to the mall, and treat yourself!!

... to sweatshops and factories.
We pay to make them bleed,
so lets keep the industry
out of sight and out of mind.

Refund society.
This one’s too gross for me.
They say that we’re born free,
but we’re everywhere in chains

"Buy one and get one free"
I'm on a killing spree.
Buy now and throw it all away.
