Feel the Water

from to be alive under the sky. by motum.

about

Inspired by David Foster Wallace's speech of the same name, 'Feel the Water' is about how easy it is to live selfishly, imprisoned in our own minds and not considerate of the needs of others. The lyrics draw upon the myth of Plato's Cave, as well as the notions of cultural conditioning, greed, individualism and a lack of spiritual life that seem to be quite typical of the individual in modern society.

lyrics

I never wanna be like you.
No sacred lottery or self-made millions, no!
in a castle counting shadows on the wall,
just waiting for your number to be called.

Just want another point of view.
stop believing what my culture tells me to;
How will I ever see the woods before the trees,
with hunger and desire blinding me?

This is my message to the world
better stop and feel the water
you’ll always feel alone if you live in no-one else’s mind but your own.
And this epitaph is written on our home,
its on every car or mobile screen we own,
and you’ll never feel alive if you’re working 9 til 5,
and when you get home all you wanna do is sleep.

I never wanna be like me!
forever stuck inside this skull-sized kingdom, NO!
More alive out in the woods sitting by the stream.
If only I could chase someone else’s dream.

I only wanted to be free!
but my brains hard-wired and my eyes are wired shut.
with this headache growing stronger by the day,
and everyone keeps getting in my way.

This is my message to the world
better stop and feel the water
you’re born into the grave if you live in no-one else’s mind but your own.
And this epitaph is written on our home,
its on every car or cell phone screen we own,
and you’ll never feel alive if you’re working 9 til 5,
and when you get home all you wanna do is sleep.
