about
'Paean' is a study on time and existence. The verses summarize the 'past' of humankind, from the first 'footsteps on the shore', through language, farming, war, religion, science and industry. The chorus pictures a man on a hill, asking 'how did he come to be' at this present moment, and will he be remembered in the future?
A paean is a song of praise or triumph, and this song differs from the more cynical tone of the album, by ending with a positive tone: 'Hands were made to hold, for neighbors young and old.' and 'If its love that keeps us together does it matter how far we've come?'
lyrics
Could I hear footsteps on the shore, ten thousand years ago or more?
and what’s beneath the road where the traffic flows?
And were there voices in the field before the arrow heads and shields
drove the all away, and what did they say?
**Chorus**
From a mountain high, a man looks up towards the sky
and asks how did he come to be in this world in this family,
and many years from now, will this anthem echo on,
or will it fade today? Does it matter anyway?
Now at the centre of it all, beneath the stars we are so small, but progress never waits, before the apple’s fate.
The altar crumbles and the chimneys rise, the plight of greed will never die, but hands were made to hold, for neighbours young and old.
**Chorus**
From a mountain high, a man looks up towards the sky
and asks how did he come to be in this world in this family,
and many years from now, will this anthem echo on,
or will it fade today? Does it matter anyway?
Take a look at us now. Look at all we’ve done.
In a dusty corner of the galaxy, this fragile web we’ve spun.
Some are bound to the Earth; others worship the air.
While the fire roars and the waters pour,
our hearts can grow more than we’ll ever know.
If its love that can keep us together does it matter how far we’ve come?
