'Paean' is a study on time and existence. The verses summarize the 'past' of humankind, from the first 'footsteps on the shore', through language, farming, war, religion, science and industry. The chorus pictures a man on a hill, asking 'how did he come to be' at this present moment, and will he be remembered in the future?

A paean is a song of praise or triumph, and this song differs from the more cynical tone of the album, by ending with a positive tone: 'Hands were made to hold, for neighbors young and old.' and 'If its love that keeps us together does it matter how far we've come?'

Could I hear footsteps on the shore, ten thousand years ago or more?
and what’s beneath the road where the traffic flows?
And were there voices in the field before the arrow heads and shields
drove the all away, and what did they say?
