about

'Pandora' is principally about climate denial as well as the fossil fuel (namely oil) industry and its contribution to global warming on our planet.

The verses are spoken by a climate denier, who couldn't care less about the polar ice caps or 'sixth extinction.' Meanwhile the chorus looks at the reality of the situation, comparing our current situation to the Ancient Greek myth of Pandora's box, which was 'opened' when crude oil was first successfully obtained at Drakes Folly in 1859. Since then, oil has become the backbone of modern life and the jewel of global economies, to the extent that 'the future of life on earth as we know it' faces a serious threat, and the forces of (extreme) weather are increasingly reported to be going against us, like the gods who struck Atlantis.

Although the lyrics are fueled by climate anxiety, the chorus has a hopeful ending, that 'I still believe that we can make it through!' (otherwise 'how can we sleep?')

lyrics

Well never mind, it doesn’t mean a thing to me,
so I’ll turn away and just move on.
It’s just a piece of ice floating in the arctic sea.
I’ll feign to act like there’s nothing wrong

**Chorus**
But Pandora opened …and all the evils flew out of it.
…from that tiny hole drilled in 1859.
The oracle has spoken, Atlantis will fall beneath the oceans,
if we take no notice, and go on with our lives.
How can we sleep when our ecosystem hangs in the balance?
…between human greed and responsibility.
But I have a dream - It’s called “the future of life on earth as we know it.”
And I still believe that we can make it through.

Well never mind, it’s just a mass extinction;
that’ll leave more room for us to roam.
They say faith is blind, but what’s the use in scientists,
when greed and oil sit at the throne.

But I still have a dream - It’s called “the future of life on earth as we know it.”
Do you still believe that we can make it through?
